I started CrossFit after having shoulder surgery. I started gaining weight again, and my regular gym workouts were not working. I was always skeptical about CrossFit but thought I would give it a try, with the help of a Groupon, of course. CrossFit helped me get stronger and overcome a lot of deficits related to my shoulder injury. I was told by my doctor that I would never lift weight over my head again and I would never be able lift any heavy weights again.
With the help of the great coaches at CrossFit Furion, I proved that doctor wrong. I love the motivational and supportive environment. I also love the varied workouts so it never gets old. I was worried that everyone would better than me and I would not be able to keep up. I quickly learned that is not what CrossFit is all about. I was also worried that the coaches would ignore my pre-existing injury. Once again, this was not true. Carlo really helped me through this without injuring myself further.
I was really bored with my regular gym, and I needed a change of pace. Matthew Scott told me about the free community class at Furion, so I decided to check it out. I knew I’d be back after that first class almost immediately! Two and a half years later, I am so much stronger than when I walked through the door for the first time! Stronger than I probably ever thought I could be actually.
It’s also been a great way to relieve the stresses of everyday life. The most challenging workouts leave me feeling the best mentally. I love so many things about it – the community, the amazing friends I’ve made (Amy’s right, Furion is truly a second family), hanging out with everyone before and after class, eating healthier, the excitement of finally accomplishing something that you’ve been working so hard for, the PRs that keep everyone coming back for more, and watching everyone else get stronger every single day.
I was nervous about coming into an environment where I felt like everyone knew so much more than me. And everyone seemed so strong, it was intimidating, but that went away pretty quickly. The first few weeks, I just took everything in, because there was so much to learn (terminology, techniques, etc.).
I started CrossFit after moving to New Jersey and wanted to make friends who had like-minded interests. It has helped me make friends, but not only that, it has put me in a better place in my life. Given me more confidence in myself, which is something I have always struggled with. I love being challenged every day I walk into the gym and cheering someone else on while they push through a workout! The amount of dedication I see from others in the gym makes me want to push myself even harder every day. I feel that when you are with strong, driven people, it pushes you to put your absolute best out there and keep pushing towards your own goals as well.
